Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Defends NEP, Urges Sonia Gandhi to Support ‘Indianisation’ of Education

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday praised the New Education Policy (NEP), emphasizing that it symbolizes the “Indianisation” of the country’s education system. His remarks came in response to criticism from Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who, in an opinion piece published, accused the Centre of using the NEP to advance its “three core agendas: centralisation, commercialisation, and communalisation.”

Addressing reporters in Nagpur, CM Fadnavis dismissed these allegations and urged Sonia Gandhi to gain a better understanding of the policy before opposing it. He argued that replacing the British-era education system introduced by Thomas Macaulay with an Indianised model should not be a point of contention.

“If the education system that was designed to enslave our country is now being replaced with an Indianised framework, there should be no objection. Any patriot would support this transformation. I believe Sonia Gandhi ji should learn more about the policy and wholeheartedly back the Indianisation of India’s education system,” Fadnavis stated.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed concerns over language-based divisions in the country. Speaking at an event on Saturday, he reaffirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) commitment to protecting and promoting Hindi alongside all Indian languages.

“Some individuals are unnecessarily creating controversy over Tamil and Hindi. However, the BJP remains dedicated to safeguarding Hindi and all other Indian languages, and we are actively working in this direction. There is no competition between Hindi and regional languages; rather, they complement and strengthen one another,” Singh emphasized.

He further urged an end to divisive narratives surrounding language, stressing the importance of unity. “This trend of dividing the country on linguistic lines must stop. If there’s anyone who can effectively spread this message and contribute to national unity, I believe our sisters can play a more impactful role in doing so,” he added.

The statements by Fadnavis and Singh reflect the BJP’s broader push for educational and linguistic reforms, positioning the NEP as a step toward reclaiming India’s cultural identity while also addressing concerns of inclusivity in the linguistic landscape.
